NREL Researchers to Study Feasibility of Gulf of Mexico Offshore Wind

July 18, 2017

Offshore Wind reports that the Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will conduct a survey to determine the feasibility of potential offshore renewable energy resources in the Gulf of Mexico, primarily offshore wind. According to NREL researchers, the survey is funded by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and can determine whether the region can “transform 50 years of offshore manufacturing and deployment expertise into a thriving offshore industry.” NREL researchers Walt Musial and Suzanne Tegen will use the NREL-developed geospatial offshore wind cost model to determine the levelized cost of energy for Gulf Coast offshore wind.
