New Berkeley Lab Study Explores Impacts of High Variable Renewable Energy Futures

May 21, 2018

Researchers at the Energy Department’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory announced a new report, Impacts of High Variable Renewable Energy Futures on Wholesale Electricity Prices and on Electric-Sector Decision Making. Increasing penetrations of variable renewable energy can affect wholesale electricity price patterns and make them different from past price patterns. The researchers found that high shares of variable energy resources lead to several profound changes in the characteristics of electric power systems. A slide deck and the underlying raw modeling results are also available at the link above.
