State, Fishermen Map Possible Conflicts at Sea to Help Clear Way for Future Wind Turbines
Aug. 22, 2017
During a recent open house discussion with local fishermen, representatives from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) learned which areas are most critical to the fishing industry and how offshore wind development could be coordinated to have the least impact possible. NYSERDA officials are nearing the end of the research phase of the offshore wind master plan for the state and hope to soon pinpoint areas for wind farm development. The state would then create leases for those areas by the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and then offer the leases for bids by offshore wind development companies. Two offshore leases have already been awarded for wind farm development to serve New York.
In other news related to NYSERDA’s master plan process, a coalition of business, environmental, and community leaders voiced its support for developing offshore wind energy off the state's coastline.
