Massachusetts Ski Resort Celebrates a Decade of Wind Energy

Aug. 22, 2017

North American Windpower reports that officials at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Massachusetts are reflecting on the tenth anniversary of their 1.5-megawatt wind turbine project and how wind power has contributed to one of the few resorts in the United States powered 100% by renewable energy. According to Brian Fairbank, chairman of The Fairbank Group that runs the resort, many initially thought the wind turbine installation was a huge financial risk. The WINDExchange team also reflected on the project, looking back to 2008 when our researcher Frank Oteri interviewed Brian Fairbank about the new project and the lessons learned. At that time, Fairbanks said: “While we spend most of our time talking about the project's environmental merits, it is important to realize that the decision to construct was based first on the economics.” According to North American Windpower, the turbine paid for itself in 7 years.
